Forty people in the children’s corner of the library; babies, toddlers, mums, dads and grand parents all singing ‘Five Little Ducks Went Swimming One Day’ and my baby slept through it. Despite efforts to bounce him awake JP slept for the full forty minutes of his first ‘bounce and rhyme’ class.
Bounce & Rhyme has become a regular fixture. At six months, JP no longer sleeps but listens, smiles and takes great delight in watching the toddlers make the hand gestures that go with the nursery rhymes. I love singing him my favorite lullaby which, being called Ali, I thought my Mum sang only for me. We’ve also updated it for playtime thanks to our ‘bounce & rhyme’ song leader.
Ally, bally, ally bally bee
Sittin on yer Mammy’s knee
Waiting for a wee baw bee
Tae buy some Coulter’s candy
Coulter’s candy, a penny for a lump
It’s enough to make you jump
If you do, your sure to fall
Wipe you hands now, that’s it all!
Going to bounce and rhyme has brought back memories of visiting the village library as a child more than thirty years ago and turned my book famine into a feast. Since becoming a member in June I’ve borrowed two DVDs, read three books from the Orange long list and borrowed twenty books from ‘Baby Signing’ to ‘A New Green History of the World’. I am a convert to the benefits of the library; borrowing rather than buying, reducing clutter, respecting books so that someone else can revel in a pristine hard back, enjoying beautiful ‘listed’ buildings and renewing books online to avoid late fees. Get this, you can even order books online to ‘pick up’ at a library most convenient for you.
You can join at any Glasgow library, just take one piece of identification ( recent energy bill etc) to your local library. More information on joining your local library, bounce & rhyme and the Glasgow Online Catalogue.
